First Impression

I downloaded LiveBoard on a Tuesday morning after my old whiteboard app pushed a “simplified” update that removed half the tools I used. My first test was a 10 AM sync with my dev, Mark. I created a board, pasted the link in our Slack channel, and he was in. No sign-up for him, which was a good start. The interface was clean, almost too clean. I spent the first five minutes poking around for basic things like layer locking or a custom color picker. They weren’t there. It felt like walking into a nicely furnished apartment only to find the kitchen cabinets are mostly empty. It worked, but I immediately sensed the ceiling.

What It Does Well

The real-time collaboration is genuinely solid. During that first call with Mark, watching his cursor zip around labeled with his name felt natural and responsive, with no noticeable lag on my Pixel 7. The pen smoothing is excellent; my terrible finger-drawn lines looked clean and professional, which saved me some embarrassment when sketching a quick UI concept. I also threw a PDF of our project specs onto a board later that day and scribbled notes all over it. That single feature—annotating live documents during a call—is probably the app’s strongest practical use case. For a free tool, getting instant, hassle-free collaboration right is a big win.

Where It Falls Short

By day two, I’d found the cracks. The free tool limits are aggressive and poorly communicated. I was mapping out a system architecture on Thursday and right in the middle of connecting components, I got a pop-up: “Advanced Shape Limit Reached.” My next arrow just… didn’t appear. It completely broke my flow. The toolbar, while clean, has confusing iconography. The text tool is hidden under a generic ‘T’ icon that I initially thought was for “tools.” More critically, I experienced a persistent bug where the board would occasionally “jump” or re-center itself for no reason, losing my zoom focus. As someone who tests apps thoroughly, these aren’t minor quirks; they’re workflow breakers that make me distrust the tool for serious work.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so for casual, intermittent use, you can’t complain. For brainstorming with a couple of people or annotating a single document, it’ll do the job. But the moment you try to use it as a primary diagramming or planning tool, the limits clamp down hard. The upgrade to Pro seems to be about removing artificial barriers (more shapes, more images) rather than adding powerful new features. If my team needed this daily, I’d probably pay, but grudgingly, feeling like I’m buying back functionality that should be standard. There are better, more powerful dedicated diagramming apps if you’re willing to spend.

Developer & Support

This is where my opinion really soured. After the board-jumping bug messed up a second session, I used the in-app feedback form. The auto-reply said “24-48 hours.” I heard back after three days with a boilerplate message asking for my device model (already provided) and to “try restarting the app.” That’s not support; that’s deflection. The update history in the Play Store shows frequent minor version bumps, mostly “bug fixes and performance improvements,” but the core experience and glaring free-tier limitations don’t seem to evolve. It feels like development is on maintenance mode, just keeping the lights on.

Privacy & Safety

The privacy policy is standard for a free app: they collect data on usage and likely share some with third-party services for analytics. Your boards are stored on their servers, which is necessary for sync and collaboration, but there’s no clear information on encryption specifics for data at rest. For sensitive proprietary diagrams or confidential client information, I wouldn’t feel comfortable using this without a paid contract and explicit data handling agreements. For public brainstorming or non-sensitive work, the risk is probably low, but the lack of transparent, detailed security notes is a mark against it for professional use.

Frequently asked questions
Does LiveBoard allow for real-time collaboration without requiring sign-ups for guests?

Yes, LiveBoard offers hassle-free real-time collaboration. Guests can join a shared board via a link without needing to create an account, making it easy to start a session quickly.

Can I annotate PDFs or other documents directly within LiveBoard?

Yes, you can import documents like PDFs onto a board and annotate them live during a call. This is highlighted as one of the app's strongest practical features for collaborative review.

Why did my drawing tools stop working or a shape not appear while I was using the free version?

The free version has aggressive limits on advanced elements like shapes. You may encounter pop-ups blocking further use when you hit these caps, which can interrupt your workflow unexpectedly.

The board sometimes jumps or re-centers itself unexpectedly. Is this a known issue and is there a fix?

Yes, some users report a persistent bug where the board jumps or re-centers, losing zoom focus. This appears to be an unresolved software issue that can disrupt serious work.

How does LiveBoard compare to more dedicated diagramming apps for professional use?

LiveBoard is great for free, casual collaboration and annotation, but its tool limits and simpler feature set make it less powerful for primary diagramming. Dedicated diagramming apps often offer more advanced tools and fewer artificial barriers.
