About Live TV: Movies and TV Shows

I downloaded Live TV: Movies and TV Shows on a whim, looking for a free alternative to my usual streaming subscriptions. I was skeptical, but after using it for a couple of weeks, I’ve found myself opening it more often than I expected. It’s not a replacement for Netflix, but as a free app from MEIVI Company Limited, it fills a specific gap for casual, no-commitment viewing.

Features & Highlights

The app’s main draw is its live TV section. I was able to find a handful of channels that actually streamed news and some older TV series without immediately buffering. The on-demand movie library is a mixed bag—I found a couple of recent-ish action flicks, but most are older or B-movies. I really appreciate the download feature; I grabbed a documentary for a recent flight. The interface is simple, which I like. It doesn’t have fancy profiles, but the “Continue Watching” row reliably remembers where I left off.

User Experience

My first test was on my home Wi-Fi. Browsing was smooth, and starting a movie was quick. The real test was on cellular data during my bus ride. Some HD streams stuttered, but switching to a lower quality in the settings helped a lot. I tried the “personalized recommendations,” and they’re basic—mostly just showing me more from the genre I last watched. One night, I used the Chromecast option to throw a classic 80s movie from the app to my TV, and it worked without a hiccup, which was a nice surprise.

Pricing

The app is completely free with ads. You don’t need an account to start watching, which is a huge plus for testing it out. The ads are typical: 15-30 second video ads that play before your content and occasional banner ads on the menu. For a free app, the ad load is tolerable, but I did hit a streak of three ads in a row once. Is it worth it? For $0, absolutely. You get what you pay for, and in this case, it’s a functional viewer with a large, if not premium, library.

Updates & Support

The app updates every few weeks, usually with vague “bug fixes and performance improvements” notes. I did notice one update added a few more live channels. I haven’t needed to contact support, but there’s no obvious “Contact Us” section in the app itself. Any support would likely be through the standard Google Play Store developer contact, which isn’t ideal for urgent streaming issues.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded this from the official Google Play Store, which offers a base level of security. The app’s privacy policy, which I checked, states it collects device data and viewing habits for ads. Since you don’t create an account with an email, there’s less personal data at risk, but you are served targeted ads based on what you watch. It’s a standard trade-off for free apps. I didn’t encounter any shady redirects or pop-ups, which is a good sign.
