The dictionary feature is handy too — I tap on a word my opponent plays and it tells me what it means, which has taught me a few new ones like “za.” The app lets you chat with your opponents through preset messages or a keyboard, but I mostly just send the thumbs up emoji. The graphics are simple but clean, nothing fancy, which is fine by me.

User Experience

For the most part, the app just works. I open it, pick a game in progress or start a new one, and off I go. The notifications actually tell me when it’s my turn, which is helpful because I have the memory of a goldfish. That said, I’ve hit some annoying bugs. A few times the app froze while I was trying to place a word, and I had to force close it and reopen. Then my turn just disappeared and the other person got a timeout win — that stung. There are also coin packs and power-up bundles that pop up constantly. I almost bought a pack of coins once because I was stuck on a tough word, but then I just closed the app and took a break. The prices feel a bit steep for what you get — like $4.99 for a handful of coins that barely last a few games. You can earn coins by playing and completing challenges, but it’s slow. If you’re patient, the free experience is totally fine. I don’t think I’d ever pay for the subscription, but I get why someone might if ads really bother them.

Updates & Support

The app gets updated pretty regularly, which is nice. I’ve seen new events pop up like themed boards for holidays or special word challenges. But the support side is where I got let down. A month ago, I had this issue where my game with Dave just disappeared from my list. Like, the whole conversation and match history was gone. I checked my internet, restarted my phone, nothing. So I went to the help menu and sent a message through their support form. It took them three days to reply with some generic copy-paste about checking my connection. I wrote back explaining that wasn’t the problem, and then it was another five days before someone said they’d look into it. By then, Dave and I had just started a new game. The issue never really got fixed, and I never heard back. It left me feeling like they don’t really care about individual problems unless you’re a paying customer. For a big company like Zynga, that’s kind of disappointing.

Security & Privacy

I didn’t think much about this until my buddy mentioned that Zynga had a data breach a few years back. That gave me pause, but I’ve been using the app with my Facebook login and haven’t noticed anything weird. The app asks for permissions like access to your contacts if you want to invite friends, which I denied because that’s creepy. You can also play without linking any social media, just using a username and password. The privacy policy is the usual wall of legal text that nobody reads, but it basically says they collect data for ads and analytics. I haven’t had any spam or suspicious activity since starting, so it feels safe enough for a casual game. Still, if you’re paranoid, maybe use a separate password or play without linking accounts. I’m not losing sleep over it.
