About LA Fitness

I’ve been an LA Fitness member for about three years, and I downloaded their app hoping it would simplify my gym routine. Honestly, with a 2.8-star rating, my expectations were low, but as a free tool for members, I figured it was worth a shot. After using it almost daily for two months to book classes, check schedules, and log workouts, I have a very mixed bag of feelings. It does the job sometimes, but the bugs and clunky design make what should be simple tasks surprisingly annoying.

Features & Highlights

The feature list looks great on paper. I use the class schedule and booking function constantly—it’s the main reason I keep the app installed. Being able to see which Spin classes are full before I drive to the gym is a lifesaver. I also like the basic workout logger; I use it to jot down my weights and sets for strength training so I don’t forget week-to-week. The gym locator with facility details (like which locations have a pool) is handy when I’m traveling for work.

They’ve tried to build a whole ecosystem with nutrition tracking, social feeds, and rewards, but these feel half-baked. I tried logging meals for a week, but the food database was limited and clunky. The “social” aspect just shows a generic feed of motivational posts, not real interaction with my friends at the gym. The rewards are points for checking in, but I’ve never figured out what they’re actually good for.

User Experience

This is where the app falls apart. Just last Tuesday, I tried to check into my 6:00 PM yoga class. The app froze on the loading screen for a full minute, then showed an “Unable to Connect” error. I had to close it, reopen it, and rush to check in at the front desk. This isn’t rare. The screen often lags when scrolling through class schedules, especially during peak hours like Monday at 5 PM.

Navigation isn’t intuitive. To find my membership barcode, I have to tap ‘More’ > ‘My Profile’ > ‘Membership Card’—it should be right on the home screen. The design feels outdated, like an app from 2015. When I’m in a hurry, these small frustrations add up and defeat the purpose of a “convenient companion.” It feels like I’m wrestling with the app more than I’m using it to enhance my workout.

Pricing

The app itself is free to download, but you must have an active LA Fitness membership to use almost all of its features. There’s no separate subscription for the app. Is it worth it? As a free add-on to your membership, you might as well have it for the class booking feature alone. However, its buggy nature means it doesn’t add the value it promises. You’re not missing a paid premium tier; you’re missing a stable, well-designed version of the free one. It doesn’t feel like a “perk” of membership.

Updates & Support

Looking at the update history in the App Store, the developer pushes updates roughly once a month, often with vague notes like “bug fixes and performance improvements.” Sadly, the core issues I experience—check-in failures, laggy schedules—persist through these updates. I contacted support once via the in-app email form when my check-ins weren’t syncing to my rewards. I got a generic response three days later asking for my member ID and club number, and the thread just died after I replied. It wasn’t helpful. There’s no live chat or phone support for app-specific issues.

Security & Privacy

You download it from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store, so the source is safe. The app requires a lot of permissions: location (to find gyms), camera (to scan barcodes), and notifications. Their privacy policy, which I skimmed, states they collect workout data, check-in history, and device info, primarily to “improve services” and for marketing. I do see targeted ads within the app for LA Fitness promotions and protein shakes. While I don’t think they’re selling my precise workout data, the data collection feels broad for an app that struggles with basic functionality. I’d feel better about it if the app worked reliably.
