I saw someone mention hoopla Digital on a Facebook gardening group back in April. They were raving about borrowing audiobooks for free with a library card. My granddaughter Emily comes over on Saturdays and she can tap through the kids section without messing up my whole library. But I’ll be honest, finding the Kids Mode isn’t obvious. I had to ask my neighbor’s teenage son where it was. He found it in about two seconds, but it should be easier for folks like me.

Daily Use Experience

Most days, hoopla Digital is fine. I open it, search for an author I like, and see if anything is available. The search function works pretty well. I typed “Michael Connelly” and got a list that made sense. But the main menu drives me a little crazy. There’s a tab called “Browse” that shows categories, but then there’s also a “Discover” tab that shows the same stuff in a different layout. I don’t know why both exist. One Saturday morning I wanted to find a classic movie and I clicked through four different screens before I found “Movies” hidden under a drop-down. I had to put my reading glasses on and squint at the tiny icons. Also, the app sometimes freezes when I try to return a borrowed item early. I had to force close it and reopen. That happened three times last month. It’s not terrible, but it’s annoying when you’re trying to free up room for the next thing.

Cost Breakdown

The app itself costs nothing to download. You pay with your library card, which is already free if you live in the right area. My library lets me borrow 10 items per month through hoopla Digital. That’s plenty for me. I usually grab one or two audiobooks and maybe a movie. If I had to buy these things on Audible or rent them on Amazon, I’d be spending at least $30 a month. So I’m saving real money here. The only catch is that not every library supports it. My sister in Phoenix tried to sign up and her local library doesn’t participate. So it’s really a “free if you’re lucky” situation. Also, some libraries have lower limits. My friend Bob only gets 5 items per month. That would frustrate me if I were him.

I had a problem last month where an audiobook I downloaded would stop playing after 20 minutes and then skip back to the beginning. I couldn’t figure it out. Privacy Verdict

I’m not paranoid about my data, but I do think about it. hoopla Digital asks for your location and access to your photos for some reason. I denied both and the app still works fine. They also want to track your activity across other apps. I turned that off too. I read their privacy policy once and it was a wall of legal text that made my eyes glaze over. I assume they collect what you borrow and watch, which makes sense for recommendations. My bigger worry is that my library might share borrowing records. But I called my local librarian, Linda, and she said library records are protected by state law. So I feel okay about using it for normal stuff. I wouldn’t use it for anything sensitive, but for mystery novels and old Westerns, I’m comfortable.
