I downloaded Hide N Seek! about two weeks ago because my two boys, ages 8 and 11, were constantly fighting over the tablet and begging me to play something together. They love the classic hide and seek game in our backyard, so I thought this digital version might be a fun way to keep them entertained during rainy afternoons. The concept is exactly what it sounds like—you hide in a virtual map and someone else seeks you out, or you’re the seeker trying to find everyone before time runs out. My kids were super excited the first time they opened it. They jumped straight into a match on the farm map and spent a solid hour laughing and yelling at each other from across the living room. That first day was great. But then Wednesday night rolled around, and my younger son came to me asking if he could buy a “mystery box” for two dollars to get a cool ninja skin. That’s when I started looking closer at what this app really involves.

Features & Highlights

The app has a bunch of different maps like a haunted house, a snowy village, and a school playground. Each one has tons of hiding spots—lockers, bushes, under beds, behind barrels. There are also different game modes beyond the standard hide and seek. One mode is called Sardines, where one person hides and everyone else searches together. That one actually got my kids cooperating instead of competing, which was nice to see. You can also customize your character with skins, hats, and accessories. Some of these you earn just by playing and leveling up, but most of the really cool-looking ones cost real money. There’s a chat feature that lets players send quick messages during the game, like “found you!” or “over here!” But it also has a free type option where players can type whatever they want. That gave me pause. Also, the app lets you play with friends by creating private rooms, which is how my boys play together. But it also matches you with random people from all over the world if you don’t set it to private. That’s a big deal for me as a parent.

User Experience

Setting up the game was pretty straightforward. I created a family account using my email, and then I set up profiles for each of my kids. The controls are simple—a joystick on the left side of the screen to move, and buttons on the right to interact with objects or sprint. My 8-year-old picked it up in about five minutes. The graphics are colorful and cartoonish, nothing too scary or violent. When you get caught as a hider, your character does a funny little freeze animation instead of anything dramatic. Loading times are decent on my Google Pixel 7, maybe 10 to 15 seconds between matches. I did notice that the app drains battery pretty fast—after about 45 minutes of play, my phone was down to 40%. Also, there are ads. A lot of ads. After every match, there’s a 30-second video ad you have to watch before you can start a new game. My kids complain about it constantly. You can pay to remove ads, but that’s another in-app purchase. The sound effects are fine, but the background music gets repetitive after a while. I ended up muting the app and letting them listen to their own music on the speaker.

Hide N Seek! is free to download, which is how they get you. The in-app purchases start at $0.99 for a small coin pack and go up to $19.99 for a big bundle of coins and gems. Coins are used to buy basic skins and accessories. Gems are for the rare and limited-time items. There’s also a “VIP Pass” for $4.99 a month that gives you double XP, exclusive skins, and removes ads. My son begged me for that pass last Saturday morning. I told him no because I’m not paying five bucks a month for a hide and seek game. The mystery boxes are the worst—you spend 50 gems (about $1.50) and get a random item. It’s basically gambling for kids. I don’t like that at all. The game is playable without spending any money, but you’ll unlock things much slower and you’ll see a lot of ads. My kids have earned a few free skins just by playing, but the cool ones are always behind a paywall.

Updates & Support

I contacted support last week because my younger son accidentally bought a mystery box using some coins I didn’t even know he had. He clicked on it by mistake during a match. I sent an email through the app’s help section on Tuesday evening. They replied on Friday afternoon, which is three days later. That’s a long time to wait when your kid is crying over a wasted purchase. To their credit, the support person was polite and refunded the coins as a one-time courtesy. They also gave me instructions on how to turn off in-app purchases on my Google account, which I should have done from the start. The app seems to get updates every few weeks. Since I downloaded it, there’s been one update that added a new map called “The Arcade.” It’s a nice touch that keeps the game fresh. I just wish they focused more on fixing the chat moderation and ad frequency instead of adding more ways to spend money.

Security & Privacy

This is my biggest concern. The app asks for permission to access your device’s storage and your internet connection. It also collects your approximate location for ads, which is creepy. The privacy policy says they share data with third-party advertisers. For a kids’ game, that’s alarming. There’s no way to fully disable the chat feature. You can turn off voice chat, but the text chat is always on. During one match, my son’s character got a message from a random player that just said “hi.” It’s probably harmless, but it could easily be something worse. I’ve started only letting my boys play in private rooms with each other or with their cousins. No more public matches. I also set up parental controls on their Google accounts to block any purchases without my password. The app does not have a dedicated kids’ mode or parental dashboard. That’s a missed opportunity. If you’re a parent considering this app, please know that supervision is required. Do not hand your phone to a young child and walk away.
