I love that I can mix and match teams depending on the dungeon or boss I’m facing. The battles are turn-based but require real thought — you can’t just spam attacks and hope to win. I’ve had to replay some fights four or five times, swapping out heroes and changing my formation, and it feels so satisfying when I finally beat a tough enemy. The graphics are honestly better than I expected for a mobile game, not like console-level but colorful and detailed enough that the monsters don’t look like blobs. There’s also a daily quest system that gives you rewards like gold and upgrade tokens, which helps if you’re grinding without spending money. The story is cheesy but in a fun way — you’re a hero on a journey to save a magical kingdom from some dark force, and there are cutscenes every few levels. It’s not Shakespeare, but it keeps me interested.

Daily Use Experience

I usually play for about 20 to 30 minutes a day, mostly while eating lunch or riding the subway to campus. The game has an auto-battle feature that I use when I’m doing repetitive grinding for resources, but for story missions and boss fights I always play manually because the AI isn’t smart enough to handle the harder battles. One thing that bugs me is the energy system — you have a limited amount of stamina to play levels, and once it runs out you either wait for it to recharge (which takes hours) or spend gems to refill. I’ve hit that wall multiple times where I’m really into the story and then boom, “Out of Energy.” It’s a common mobile game trick, and I get why they do it, but it still frustrates me. On the plus side, the game runs smoothly on my iPhone 15 Pro, no crashes or lag even during big battles with lots of effects. The load screens are quick, and the menu navigation is straightforward. I’ve never been confused about where to find something or how to equip a hero.

Heroic Expedition is free to download, which is why I tried it in the first place. There are in-app purchases for premium currency (gems), special hero packs, and a monthly subscription that gives you extra daily rewards and removes ads. I have not spent a single dollar on this game, and I’m still able to progress through the story and complete events. You do get pop-up ads between levels sometimes, which is annoying, but you can watch a short ad to skip the wait or get a small bonus. If you’re patient, you can earn gems by completing achievements and daily quests instead of buying them. For a student on a tight budget, this is a big deal. The monthly pass costs about $4.99, which is cheaper than a coffee, but I’m personally holding out until I hit a wall I can’t get past without paying. So far, that hasn’t happened. The game is definitely designed to tempt you into spending, but it’s not pay-to-win in a way that ruins the experience for free players.

I only contacted support once, and it was because my game froze during a boss fight and I lost about an hour of progress. I submitted a ticket through the app’s help menu on a Thursday night, and I got a reply the following Monday afternoon. So it took about four days, which felt slow when I was annoyed about losing my progress, but the support person was polite and actually helpful. They gave me some free gems as compensation and told me to make sure my app was updated to avoid similar glitches. Since then I’ve been more careful to close other apps in the background when I play, and I haven’t had the same issue again. It also tracks some data for analytics and ads, which I kind of expect from free games. There’s a privacy policy you can read in the settings, and it seems standard — they don’t ask for anything weird like contacts or location. I’m not thrilled about the ad tracking, but I’ve seen worse. I use an iPhone so I just go into my settings and turn off “Allow Apps to Request to Track” for this game specifically. It still works fine. Overall, I’d say it’s about as safe as any other free mobile game.
