Grand Theft Auto V: The Manual

First Impression

I downloaded Grand Theft Auto V: The Manual because I kept forgetting the control combos while playing on my PS5 last month. I figured a quick reference on my phone would save me from pausing the game every five minutes. Right after installing it on my Samsung Galaxy S23, the app asked for access to my photos, media, and files. That raised an immediate red flag for me. Why does a manual need to see my photos? I almost deleted it right there. The interface looks clean enough at first glance, with a dark theme that matches the game’s vibe, but that permission request stuck in my mind. I spent the next ten minutes checking the privacy policy instead of actually using the app. That’s not a great start for something that’s supposed to make gaming easier.

What It Does Well

Once I got past the sketchy permission stuff, the actual content is decent. The interactive map is genuinely useful. I pulled it up last Saturday while trying to find a specific stunt jump in Los Santos, and it saved me a ton of time. The control guide helped me remember the button for switching weapons during a car chase without pausing. The digital manuals are nice to have, especially if you lost the physical copy years ago like I did. The artwork collection is a cool bonus for fans, though not something I use daily. The Social Club integration works fine for tracking your progress, but I don’t love being logged into yet another service. For what it is—a reference tool—it does the basic job without crashing or lagging on my S23.

Where It Falls Short

The biggest problem is that this app feels like it was made for a phone from 2015. Navigation is clunky. I had to tap around three different menus just to find the mission tips. The text is tiny on my S23’s screen, and there’s no option to increase font size. Some features require an internet connection, which defeats the purpose of having a manual on your phone. I was on the subway last Tuesday trying to check a control layout, and it wouldn’t load because I had no signal. Also, it hasn’t been updated in a while. I noticed some info about the newer Enhanced Edition on PS5 is missing or outdated. For a paid companion app from Rockstar Games, it feels neglected.

Is It Worth the Price?

I didn’t pay anything extra because I already owned the game, but if this costs money separately, I’d say skip it. You can find all this information for free on wikis and YouTube. The map is the only unique feature, and even that is available online. The permissions alone make me uncomfortable recommending it. If you are a hardcore completionist who needs every detail at your fingertips while playing, maybe. But for most people, including me after a month of use, it’s just not essential. I keep it installed out of convenience, but I wouldn’t miss it.

Developer & Support

Since the app worked fine for me technically, I never contacted support. But I did read recent reviews on the store before downloading, and I saw several people complaining about crashes on newer Android versions and login issues with Social Club. Rockstar Games is a huge company, so they aren’t ignoring this completely, but the lack of updates suggests they don’t prioritize this app. If you run into trouble, expect to wait or rely on forum posts. That’s disappointing for something official.

Privacy & Safety

This is my main issue. The app requests access to your device’s storage and photos. I checked their privacy policy, and it says they collect data for analytics and Social Club integration. But a manual app does not need to see my personal photos. Period. I blocked that permission in my phone settings, and the app still worked, so why ask for it in the first place? That kind of overreach makes me distrustful. I also noticed it uses tracking identifiers for ad purposes, even though there are no ads in the app. That feels sneaky. If you care about your privacy like I do, think twice before hitting install.
