It’s completely free. No ads, no upsells, no premium subscription to unlock basic features. You just need a Google account, which costs nothing. There is a paid tier for businesses through Google Workspace, but I’ve never needed it. The free version includes collaboration, offline access, 15 GB of shared storage across Drive, and all the essential tools. If your use case is personal or small business, you’ll never hit a paywall. That said, heavy users might run into storage limits if they have lots of files and photos eating up the same free space.

Updates & Support

Google pushes updates regularly. I’ve seen the app improve over the months I’ve used it—little fixes and performance tweaks that don’t break existing workflows. I contacted support once when a shared sheet started showing read-only for my partner. It took about three days to get a reply, which felt slow, but the response was clear and fixed the problem (turns out it was a permissions setting on my end). No live chat, no phone number, just email or help forums. For a free app, that’s acceptable, but if you’re trying to solve something urgent, three days is an eternity.

Security & Privacy

Your data lives in the cloud under Google’s infrastructure. That means standard encryption both in transit and at rest. I can control who sees my sheets by setting permissions—view only, comment, or edit. I also enable two-factor authentication on my Google account for extra safety. I’m not storing anything super sensitive (like passwords or financial account numbers), but I feel fine using it for business expenses and project plans. The privacy policy is typical Google: they collect usage data to improve the app, but they don’t sell your spreadsheet contents. It’s the same trade-off as using any free Google service. If that bothers you, don’t use it. For me, it’s worth the convenience.
