My Experience with Gem Stack

I swapped to Gem Stack about a year ago because my old stacking game, Tower Stacker, turned into an ad-fest where I spent more time watching commercials than actually playing. I was sitting in a coffee shop near my office on a Tuesday morning, frustrated, and just grabbed this one. I’ve been using it on my OnePlus 11 ever since, and honestly, it’s been a mixed bag. The core gameplay loop is exactly what you expect: tap to drop a gem, try to center it on the tower, and stack as high as you can. It starts easy enough, but by the time you’re past level 15 or so, the speed picks up and your margin for error shrinks to almost nothing. I’ve had some good sessions where I’m zoned in and hitting 40 or 50 stacks, and other times where I brick two drops in a row and rage quit. It’s simple, it’s satisfying when it works, and it’s a decent way to kill five minutes while waiting for a client to call back. But it’s not perfect, and the longer I’ve used it, the more the little annoyances stack up too.

Features Worth Noting

The main appeal here is the leaderboard system. You can compete with your friends or random players globally, and that’s actually kept me coming back more than I’d like to admit. I’m not usually competitive about mobile games, but seeing my name creep up the leaderboard after a good run gives me a stupid little dopamine hit. There’s also a gem unlock system where you earn points to get new visual styles for your stack. The gems look decent—colorful, with some sparkle effects that don’t look cheap. The controls are responsive on my OnePlus 11; no lag that I’ve noticed, even when things get hectic. The game also has a basic progress tracker that shows your best streak and total high score, which is nice for seeing if you’re actually improving. One feature I really appreciate is that you can skip the “you lost” animation with a quick tap instead of being forced to watch it. That saves me maybe two seconds each time, but over a year of playing, it adds up. There’s no forced or overly long intro when you open the app either—just a quick logo and you’re in. That matters when you’re only playing during a red light or a quick break.

What Needs Work

Alright, here’s where I get frustrated. First, the ad situation isn’t terrible, but it’s not great either. You get an ad every 3-4 rounds unless you pay, and some of those ads are 30 seconds with no skip button. That’s my biggest gripe. I don’t mind occasional ads in a free game, but when I’m in a flow and suddenly I’m watching a mobile RPG commercial, it kills my momentum. Second, the game doesn’t have any sound options beyond mute and unmute. I usually play with sound off anyway, but my commute buddy plays with headphones and says the music loops get annoying fast. Third, there’s no offline mode. If I’m on the subway with spotty service, the game sometimes hangs or refuses to load the leaderboard. That’s a bummer when I have no signal. Fourth, the difficulty ramps unevenly. Some levels will feel impossibly fast out of nowhere, while others are weirdly slow. It doesn’t feel like a smooth curve; it feels random. And finally, I wish there was a practice or zen mode where I could just stack without the pressure of losing and restarting. Sometimes I just want to relax, not compete.

Pricing

The app is free to download and play, which is fair. There are ads as I mentioned, and they offer a “remove ads” purchase for a few bucks—I think it was $3.99 when I checked last month. There are also in-app purchases for cosmetic gem packs and a “double points” booster that costs a couple of dollars. I haven’t spent a cent on this game and I’ve still progressed fine, so it’s not pay-to-win in a way that ruins the fun. The leaderboards don’t seem to favor paying players, which I respect. If the ads eventually push me over the edge, I’ll probably drop the $4 just to get rid of them. For what it offers, the pricing is reasonable. You aren’t getting nickel and dimed every screen.

Developer Notes

Rollic Games is the developer here, and they seem to update the app every couple of months. Since I’ve been using it, I’ve seen maybe 4 or 5 updates. Most of them were bug fixes and a few new gem skins. They haven’t added any major new game modes in the last year, which is kind of disappointing. The updates also don’t seem to address the ad frequency or the unbalanced difficulty. On the plus side, the app hasn’t crashed on me once, and it runs smoothly on my device. Their support presence is what you’d expect from a bigger mobile game studio—there’s a generic help page in the app, but I’ve never needed to contact them directly. Reading other reviews on the store, it looks like some people have had issues with account syncing across devices, but that hasn’t been a problem for me since I only play on my phone.

Security & Privacy

I checked the permissions when I first installed it. Gem Stack only asks for internet access and storage (to save your game data). No contacts, no camera, no location. That’s a relief. The privacy policy is the standard legalese about collecting data for analytics and ads, but I haven’t noticed anything sketchy like battery drain or weird background activity. My OnePlus 11’s battery life hasn’t taken a hit from this app compared to others. They also don’t require an account login to play, which is a big plus in my book. I hate apps that force you to sign up with email or social media just to start. You can optionally connect to Facebook or Google Play for leaderboards, but it’s not mandatory. That level of restraint makes me trust the developer a bit more. Just don’t expect any end-to-end encryption for your high scores—it’s a gem stacking game, not a banking app.
