About Find Location By Phone Number

I’m a retired fellow who likes things simple. My wife, Barbara, has a habit of going out for errands and losing track of time. She’ll forget her phone is on silent, and I’ll start to worry. My grandson mentioned there were apps for this, so I searched and found Find Location By Phone Number. The name sounded perfect—just type in a number and see where someone is. I thought it would be a simple solution for an old worry. I downloaded it on my iPhone 14 hoping it would give me some peace of mind without a big fuss.

Features & Highlights

The main thing it does is show a little dot on a map. That’s it. You can see where a phone is supposed to be. I tried it on myself first, just to see. It put a dot in my general area, maybe a few blocks over from my actual house on Maple Street. There’s also a feature where you can draw a circle on the map, like around our neighborhood, and get an alert if the phone leaves that circle. I tested this last Tuesday when I went to the garden center. About five minutes after I drove away, my iPad at home dinged with a notification. It was correct, but getting that alert felt strange, like I was being watched by my own gadget.

User Experience

Right off the bat, the app started asking for things. It wanted access to my contacts, my location all the time, and a bunch of other stuff. I almost stopped right there. But I wanted it to work, so I said yes. The screen itself isn’t too cluttered, just a map and a box to type a number. Here’s the big surprise, though. When I put in Barbara’s number to track her, it didn’t show her location. Instead, it told me I had to send her a link to install the app too. She had to agree to be tracked. That’s not what I expected from the name at all. It’s not “find by phone number,” it’s “find if the other person also has this app.” Once we both had it set up, the dot moved, but it was always behind. If she was driving home, I’d see her dot still at the supermarket for a good ten minutes after she’d already left.

Pricing

It’s free, which is nice. But you pay for it with advertisements. They pop up constantly. You’ll try to check the map and a full-screen ad for a puzzle game or something will cover it. You have to wait or find the tiny ‘X’ to close it. It really interrupts the flow. For a free tool, I guess I can’t complain too much, but it makes using the app feel cheap and frustrating. I didn’t see any option to pay to remove them, so you just have to live with it.

Updates & Support

I had a problem where the map wouldn’t load properly one evening. It just showed a gray grid. I tapped around and found an email address for support. I wrote them a simple note explaining the issue. I heard back… let me think… it was four days later. So not quick. The reply was polite and asked me to make sure my phone’s location services were on, which they were. It felt like a general answer they send to everyone. The problem fixed itself the next day, probably when I restarted my phone. The support was there, but it wasn’t speedy or particularly helpful for my specific glitch.

Security & Privacy

This is my biggest hang-up. To work, this app needs deep access to your phone. It knows where you are every minute of the day. It has your contact list. That’s a lot of trust to put in a free app from a developer I don’t know. While I only use it with Barbara, and we both agreed, it still sits in the back of my mind. Who else is seeing this information? The privacy policy is a long document full of legal terms that I frankly didn’t understand. For something that’s supposed to make me feel secure about a loved one’s whereabouts, it introduces a whole new kind of worry about where my own information is going.

Frequently asked questions
Can I track someone's location just by entering their phone number?

No, you cannot. The person you wish to track must also install the app and explicitly consent to being tracked by accepting an invitation link you send them. The app name is misleading in this regard.

How accurate and timely is the location tracking on the map?

The location shown is a general estimate and can be off by several blocks. Furthermore, the location updates are not real-time and can lag significantly, sometimes showing a person's previous location for up to ten minutes after they have left.

Why does the map sometimes not load and just show a gray grid?

This is a known loading issue. First, ensure your device's location services are turned on for the app. If the problem persists, it may be a temporary app or server error, but support response times can be slow, often taking several days.

How do I stop the constant full-screen advertisements?

There is currently no option within the app to pay for an ad-free experience. You must manually close each ad by tapping the small 'X' to continue using the app, which can be a frequent interruption.

How does this app compare to Apple's Find My for tracking a family member?

Unlike Apple's Find My, which is integrated and designed for trusted family sharing, this app requires both parties to install a separate, ad-supported application. Find My typically offers more precise, real-time location sharing without the intrusive ads or consent process for each session.
