First Impression

So my friend Josh kept telling me to get Facebook again because he said it was the only place his whole family posted stuff. My old app, I forget the name, started crashing right when I tried to watch a video of my nephew’s birthday party last October. So I caved and downloaded this one on a Wednesday night while watching TV. First thing I noticed was how busy everything looks. Like, seriously, the screen is packed with stuff. There are videos from people I don’t remember adding, ads for shoes I looked at once, and little red notification bubbles everywhere. I spent the first ten minutes just trying to find where my friends’ posts even were. Once I figured out the scroll, it was kind of cool seeing old high school buddies and my aunt’s garden photos all mixed together. But I’ll be honest, I felt a little overwhelmed at first. My Pixel 7 handled it fine, no lag or anything, but the layout felt like a crowded room.

What It Does Well

Honestly, once you get the hang of it, Facebook is pretty good at keeping you in the loop. I live about four hours from my parents, and now they post pictures of their dog all the time. That alone makes it worth the download for me. The commenting is easy, just tap and type, and people actually reply quickly. I joined a local buy-nothing group for my neighborhood, and last Sunday I scored a free bookshelf from a woman named Carol. The marketplace feature is super handy if you need to sell something fast. I sold an old coffee table in two days. The events thing is also clutch. My buddy’s band played at a bar downtown last Friday, and I only knew about it because Facebook sent me a reminder. Oh, and the live video feature? My sister did a live stream of her dog’s first snow, it was funny and felt really immediate. The app doesn’t crash on me, which is more than I can say for some other stuff I’ve used. It feels stable, like it handles all that random content without choking. Even when I’m on data, videos load pretty quick.

Where It Falls Short

Okay, so here’s the thing. This app can be a total time suck, and not always in a good way. The endless scroll is real. I’ll open it to check one thing, and next thing I know it’s an hour later and I’ve watched three videos about raccoons in garbage cans. The ads are everywhere, and sometimes they’re for stuff I literally just talked about near my phone, which feels creepy. My wife mentioned she needed new running shoes, and boom, an ad for running shoes pops up. That’s a bit much. Also, the notifications are out of control. I had to turn off like thirty different settings because it kept buzzing for random birthdays and events I didn’t care about. On my Pixel 7, I noticed the battery drains a bit faster when I’m scrolling Facebook for a while, especially if there are lots of videos. And the comment sections on public posts? Pure chaos. People arguing about everything under the sun. I accidentally responded to a post about a local pizza place and got like fifty replies from strangers. I do not need that energy.

Is It Worth the Price?

Well, it’s free, so I can’t complain about the money part. But you’re definitely paying with your attention and your data. I get that they need to show ads to keep it free, but sometimes it feels like I’m watching more commercials than a cable TV channel. For the price of zero dollars, it does a lot. You can keep in touch with people, sell junk, find events, and kill time when you’re waiting for a dentist appointment. But there’s a cost in how much you get sucked in. If I could pay like five bucks to get rid of all ads and have it be cleaner, I’d probably do it. But since that’s not an option, I’ll keep using it because my family is on here and I don’t want to miss my nephew’s weird dance videos. So yeah, it’s worth it if you can handle the noise and have some self-control. I do not have that self-control, but that’s my problem.

Developer & Support

I had a weird issue about two weeks in. My timeline stopped showing my close friends’ posts first, and it started showing stuff from pages I’d never liked. It was frustrating because I missed my dad’s post about his retirement party. I tried to reach support through the app’s help menu. I filled out a form and they got back to me three days later with a generic copy-paste answer about how the algorithm works. I replied asking if I could fix it manually, and they never responded again. Not great. It felt like I was talking to a robot. For a company this big, you’d think they’d have actual people who could help. I ended up just unfollowing a bunch of pages and it got better, but I shouldn’t have to do detective work to see my own family. Support is definitely the weak link here. If your app breaks, don’t expect a helpful person on the other end.

Privacy & Safety

I’ll be straight with you, I don’t love how much this app knows about me. It suggests friends I barely talked to in high school and shows me ads for stuff my girlfriend googled on her phone. That’s not a coincidence. I went into the privacy settings and spent twenty minutes turning off location tracking and ad personalization. It was confusing, honestly, with all the toggles and options. I don’t think the average person knows how much data they’re giving away. On the safety side, I’ve seen some weird accounts send my friend requests. I just block them and move on. My mom got her account hacked once, and it was a nightmare to fix. Facebook eventually got it back for her, but it took over a week. So I’d say it’s about as safe as you make it. If you’re careful about what you post and who you add, you’re probably fine. But I wouldn’t trust it with anything super personal. I keep my settings locked down and only share stuff with close friends. That’s the only way to feel halfway okay about it.
