First Impression
I was looking for a new game to play on the train, something with a big world to explore. The screenshots for Evil Lands looked great, so I gave it a shot. Right away, the character creator was impressive. I made an archer with green tattoos and spent way too long on it. Jumping into the world felt exciting. The graphics on my Pixel 7 were sharp, and seeing other players run around made it feel alive. My first quest to hunt some corrupted boars was simple but satisfying. I started to think I’d found a real gem.
What It Does Well
The world is packed with things to do. Last Saturday morning, I got completely sidetracked from my main quest because I found a hidden fishing spot by a waterfall. I spent an hour there just relaxing and catching different fish. The combat feels good once you get the hang of it. Landing a perfect headshot on a sprinting wolf never gets old. I also joined a casual guild, and running a dungeon called the Frostbone Crypt with them was a blast. We failed the first time, figured out the ice mechanic, and beat the boss on the second try. The feeling of teamwork is genuine, and you can play for hours without feeling forced to pay.
Where It Falls Short
My biggest issue is the performance and battery drain. After about an hour of play, my phone gets noticeably warm. The battery just melts away. I was playing in a doctor’s waiting room on Tuesday and went from 80% to 30% in under 90 minutes. It also gets choppy in the main city when it’s crowded. Textures pop in, and other players sometimes appear out of thin air. The controls can be a bit slippery too, especially during intense PvP fights where a missed dodge means you’re done.
Is It Worth the Price?
As a free game, it’s hard to complain too much. You can absolutely have a great time without spending money. I haven’t bought anything. The cash shop is always there, flashing cosmetics and XP boosts, but it doesn’t feel overly pushy during normal gameplay. The value is definitely there if you just want a deep mobile RPG to sink time into. Just be ready for the ads for their “special offers” every time you log out.
Developer & Support
This is where my experience soured. I had a weird bug where a quest item wouldn’t spawn. After checking online forums, I had to use the in-app support. I sent a detailed message with a screenshot. I got an auto-reply saying they’d get back to me. Two days later, I got a generic response asking if I’d tried restarting the game. I replied that I had, and that was it. Radio silence. It’s been over a week now with no follow-up. It makes the whole game feel a bit abandoned, like if something really breaks, you’re on your own.
Privacy & Safety
I always check app permissions, and this one raised my eyebrows immediately. It asks for access to your phone’s files and media, along with a ton of other device data. Their privacy policy is a long, vague document that basically says they collect everything: device ID, location, how you play, who you talk to. They share it with “analytics partners” and for “marketing.” I don’t like that. There’s no reason a fantasy game needs to know what’s in my photos. I turned off every permission I could, but the game kept prompting me to re-enable them for “full functionality.” It feels sneaky and has made me consider uninstalling it, fun as it is.
What kind of character customization does Evil Lands offer?
The game has a detailed character creator that lets you design unique heroes, like an archer with green tattoos. You can spend a lot of time fine-tuning your appearance before jumping into the world.
Is there a lot of side content beyond the main quests?
Yes, the world is packed with activities like hidden fishing spots by waterfalls where you can relax and catch different fish. You can easily get sidetracked for hours exploring and enjoying these optional features.
Why does my phone get hot and the battery drain so fast in Evil Lands?
The game is demanding on hardware, causing noticeable heat and battery drain after about an hour of play. For example, you might lose 50% battery in 90 minutes, especially in crowded areas.
What can I do about lag and choppy performance in the main city?
Performance issues like texture pop-in and players appearing out of thin air are common in crowded cities. Lowering graphics settings or avoiding peak hours can help reduce the choppiness.
How does Evil Lands compare to other free MMORPGs like Albion Online?
Evil Lands offers a more casual, quest-driven experience with a focus on exploration and guild dungeons, whereas Albion Online is heavily PvP-focused with a full loot system. Evil Lands feels less punishing for solo players and has a friendlier cash shop.
