Final total after “delivery fee” ($3.99), “service fee” ($2.50), and a small order fee ($1.50) came out to $17.49. That’s basically double. I tipped $3 because I’m not a monster, so I paid over $20 for a burger and fries. The fees were different every time though — sometimes lower for restaurants closer to my apartment. The app clearly lists all these charges before you pay, so there’s no surprise at the end. They kept pushing me to try DashPass with “free delivery” for $9.99 a month, but I’m not biting until I know I’ll order more than twice a month. I’m skeptical about apps collecting my data, and DoorDash definitely asks for a lot. Location access, camera access (for receipts maybe?), and contact list if you want to share orders. I turned off camera access immediately because why does a food app need my camera? Location I kept on while using the app because the tracking feature needs it. They also want your email and phone number for updates, which I gave reluctantly. The privacy policy is long and boring, but skimming it, they sell data to third parties for advertising. That’s basically every app these days, so I’m not shocked. I didn’t notice any weird spam or extra ads showing up on my phone after using DoorDash, so that’s a plus. But I’m deleting the app after this trial because I don’t want them hoarding my order history forever. If you care about privacy, use a burner email and turn off permissions you don’t need.
