So I finally caved and got a Cricut machine last year after seeing my neighbor’s amazing birthday banners and custom t-shirts. I thought cool, I’ll just download the free app on my Samsung Galaxy A54 and start making stuff right away. Turns out Cricut Design Space is the only way to actually run the machine — you can’t just plug it in and go. The app itself is basically the brain of the whole operation. You design, pick images, slice, weld, and then send it to the cutter. It’s pretty wild what it can do once you figure it out. I’m a mom of two kids and work part-time, so I don’t have hours to fiddle with complicated software. This app is definitely powerful, but I’d say it’s more for people who already know design basics. The interface on my phone is a bit cramped compared to a computer, but it works for quick edits or if I’m sitting on the couch waiting for laundry to finish.

Core Features

You get a bunch of tools to play with. There’s a library of images and fonts — some free, most cost extra. I can upload my own photos or drawings, which is how I made my daughter’s unicorn birthday invites. The app lets you layer designs, change colors, resize things, and even write text along a curve. One thing I use a lot is the “slice” tool to cut one shape out of another — sounds fancy but it’s really just subtracting. There’s also a “weld” feature to merge shapes into one piece so the machine cuts it clean. You can sync projects between your phone and computer, which saved me once when I started a sign on my laptop and finished it on my phone during soccer practice. But honestly, I wish it had more basic templates for beginners. I spent a solid 45 minutes one Tuesday night trying to figure out how to make a simple circle text and ended up just googling YouTube tutorials.

Real-World Use

I mostly use it for kids’ crafts, birthday decorations, and labeling stuff around the house. Last month I made a set of “Mason’s Closet” vinyl labels for my son’s room — took me about 20 minutes on the app and another 10 to cut and apply. Pretty satisfying. But there’s a learning curve. The first time I tried to cut a design I downloaded, the machine just sat there blinking. I had to restart the app twice and re-sync it. Also, sometimes the app crashes right in the middle of editing, which is annoying when you’ve been tweaking something for half an hour. I’ve lost progress more than once. Back in January I tried to make Valentine’s day cards for my kid’s class and the app kept freezing. I ended up ditching the project and buying store-bought cards. That stung. The app works better when you’re on WiFi, and don’t even try to do anything big on mobile data — it lags like crazy. For simple stuff like text and basic shapes it’s fine, but complex layered projects are way easier on a computer.

Pricing & Value

Here’s the thing that bugs me — the app is free to download, but it feels like a tease. Most of the nice images, fonts, and ready-to-make projects require a Cricut Access subscription. That’s about $10 a month or $96 a year. I tried the free trial and it was great, but after it ended I went back to using only what came free and it’s pretty limited. I don’t think it’s worth paying monthly for a hobby I do maybe once or twice a month. I’ve spent maybe $15 total on individual images over the year. So if you’re a casual user like me, you can get by without the subscription, but you’ll be frustrated by the paywalls. My friend is a hardcore scrapbooker and she swears by the subscription because she downloads like 50 images a month. For me, I’d rather pay once for an app that just gives me all the basics.

Updates & Support

The app has gotten a few updates since I started using it. Some fixed bugs, some just changed the layout, which confused me for a bit. I contacted support one time because my projects wouldn’t sync between my phone and my brother’s tablet when I was visiting him. I emailed them on a Friday and got a reply the following Wednesday — so about 4 days. The person was helpful and walked me through clearing the cache and re-linking my account. Problem got solved. But 4 days for a sync issue is a long time when you’re in the middle of a project. I’d say if you’re stuck and need quick help, the community forums and YouTube are faster. The app developers seem to add seasonal content and new fonts fairly often, so it’s not abandoned.

Data & Privacy

I do think about privacy because the app asks for access to my photos and camera to upload images. I get why — you need to upload your own designs — but it still makes me pause. Cricut says they collect usage data and project info to improve the app. There’s a privacy policy you can read, but honestly I skimmed it. I don’t upload anything sensitive — just kid drawings and family photos for projects — so I’m not super worried. But if you’re the type who cares a lot about data collection, it’s worth looking into. I did notice that once I gave it photo access, it didn’t ask again, so that’s decent. No weird ads in the app, which I appreciate. It’s strictly Cricut’s own stuff.
