First Impression

I’ll be honest—I downloaded Coffee Stack last October after seeing someone mention it in a Reddit thread about “hidden gem coffee apps.” My first thought was, “Okay, another list of recipes I could Google for free.” But the screenshots looked clean, so I gave it a shot. The sign-up process was quick—just an email and a password, no credit card demanded. That got my guard down a little. The interface is nice, I’ll give it that. Sleek icons, smooth scrolling. But right away I noticed the so-called “huge collection” of recipes had maybe 40 or so before hitting a wall. And a lot of them were just the basics: drip coffee, French press, latte—stuff anyone with a kettle already knows. I was hoping for more quirky international drinks like a proper Vietnamese egg coffee or a Turkish sand brew. Not there. Still, for a free download, I figured I’d explore more before judging.

What It Does Well

The step-by-step instructions are actually decent. They break things down into small steps, which helped me nail a pourover on a lazy Sunday morning without screwing up the water temperature. The built-in shopping list is handy too—I’ve used it a few times when I was at the grocery store and couldn’t remember if I needed oat milk or whole milk for a recipe I bookmarked three weeks ago. The social part is okay—you can see what other users are making, and I’ve saved a couple of ideas from there. The profile customization is basic but works. I also like that you can set your preferred milk and sweetness, so the app filters recipes that match. It saved me from scrolling past sugar-heavy drinks I’d never make. The design is definitely its strongest point. No lag on my Pixel 7, even after a year of use. It’s pleasant to look at, and the icons for each coffee type are cute. That part kept me opening it occasionally.

Where It Falls Short

Here’s where I get frustrated. The app feels incomplete unless you pay. There are these “exclusive recipes” that are locked behind a paywall—and they’re the interesting ones, like Moroccan spiced coffee or Japanese iced pour methods. I tried to access one just to see the ingredients, and it told me to “upgrade to Premium.” That’s fine, but there’s no clear pricing upfront. I had to dig through three menus to find out it’s $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year. For a coffee recipe app? That feels steep when I can watch ten YouTube tutorials for free. Also, the “nearby coffee shops” feature that some reviews mention? Not in my version. Maybe it’s region-locked, but it’s literally not on my app at all. And the loyalty program is a joke—you get a digital stamp every time you make a recipe from the app, but I’ve accumulated about 12 stamps in a year, and the only reward is a discount on the Premium subscription. So they’re basically paying me in virtual currency to convince me to pay real money. Smart, but annoying.

Is It Worth the Price?

For me? No. Not yet. I’ve used the free version for a year, and I’ve gotten maybe 10 solid recipes out of it that I actually use regularly. The rest are either too basic or locked. If you’re the kind of person who loves trying every variation of cold brew and wants a polished app to organize that, maybe the $3.99/month is worth it. But I tested every free feature first—and I found that the built-in timer, the recipe search, and the shopping list are all available in other free apps like Brew Timer or even just a notes app. The Premium recipes better be incredible, but I’m not willing to gamble $30 to find out. I’d rather buy a bag of good beans with that money. Honestly, if they dropped the price to $1.99 a month or offered a one-time purchase option, I might bite. But monthly subscription for coffee recipes? Hard pass for now.

I had a problem last winter—the app crashed every time I tried to open the “seasonal recipes” tab on a Thursday afternoon. I emailed support through the app. Got an automated reply two days later saying they’d look into it. Then nothing for a week. I followed up, and someone finally wrote back saying they’d “noted the issue and would patch it in a future update.” That update never came. The crash stopped happening after about a month on its own, maybe because they pushed a silent fix, but I never got a proper explanation. It left me feeling like if I paid for Premium and had a real problem, I’d be stuck waiting and guessing. The support team seems small and overstretched. The FAQ page is just three generic questions. No phone number, no live chat. For a paid app, that’s weak. For a free one, it’s frustrating but not surprising.

Privacy & Safety

I’m careful with what I install. Coffee Stack asks for location access—I denied it and the app still worked fine, so that’s a good sign. It also wants notification permissions for “new recipe alerts.” I said yes, and I get maybe one notification per week, not spammy. They do collect usage data, which is pretty standard. I looked at their privacy policy—it’s a wall of legalese, but I didn’t see any red flags like selling your data to ad networks. The app doesn’t have ads either, which I appreciate. That’s actually rare for a free app. No weird permissions like accessing photos or contacts. Feels clean. But there’s no two-factor authentication on the account, and the password requirements are weak (only 6 characters minimum). That bugs me a little. If you’re using a shared device, maybe log out after each session. I’d say it’s safe enough for a recipe app, but I wouldn’t store any personal payment info here.
