First Impression

I saw a clip of this game on TikTok last Tuesday night. Someone was screaming while a shadowy figure chased them, and the comments were full of people tagging their friends. I was bored, so I figured why not, and hit download. The initial load was quick, which I appreciated. I jumped into a public match right away, and the atmosphere hit me immediately. The sound design is legitimately creepy—distant whispers, floorboards groaning. My first match was in the asylum with two randoms. We were whispering over the proximity chat, trying to find a fuse, when the monster’s heavy footsteps started getting closer. I rounded a corner and came face-to-face with the thing. I actually jumped and fumbled my phone. For a free game, it got my heart racing in under five minutes. That’s a good sign.

What It Does Well

The core scare factor works. When you have a good team that actually uses their mics, the tension is fantastic. The proximity voice chat is a killer feature. Getting separated from your friends in the foggy forest map and having their whispers cut out is genuinely isolating and scary. You have to actually cooperate and think under pressure, which is more engaging than just running. I played with my friend Sarah and her brother last weekend, and we spent a solid twenty minutes in the asylum, quietly coordinating to distract the monster while one of us solved a puzzle. The maps have a decent amount of variety to keep things from getting stale immediately. For a zero-dollar investment, it delivers solid, jumpy fun with friends.

Where It Falls Short

My patience wears thin with technical issues, and this app has them. The controls are the biggest offender. Trying to tap a small key on a shelf with my thumb is annoyingly imprecise; my character just sort of floats around it. I got stuck on a tree root in the forest map during a crucial escape and had to quit the match. Nothing kills horror atmosphere faster than a bug. Matchmaking with random players is a total gamble. Half the time you get someone who either has no mic, plays music through their mic, or just runs off alone to die instantly. The app also drained my iPhone 14 battery noticeably faster than other games, which is frustrating when you’re trying to play for a bit.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so the barrier to entry is zero. You absolutely get scares and fun for that price. The ads are placed between matches, so they don’t interrupt gameplay, and you can watch optional ones for silly hats if you want. The in-app purchases are only for cosmetics, so there’s no pay-to-win nonsense. For a quick, spooky session with friends you’re already on a call with, it’s a great pick. Just don’t expect a polished, AAA experience. You’re trading some jank for free scares, and for me, that’s an acceptable trade most of the time.

Developer & Support

I had an issue where a cosmetic I’d unlocked didn’t show up in my inventory. I emailed support not really expecting a reply. To their credit, they did get back to me with clear steps to fix it. The downside? It took three full days. That’s too slow for a simple inventory glitch. I have seen a new map added since I started playing two weeks ago, so the developer DarkGamesSCB does seem to be updating the game, which is a good sign. I just wish they’d prioritize fixing the existing control and collision bugs before adding more content.

Privacy & Safety

The app asks for microphone permission, which makes sense for the voice chat. It doesn’t ask for anything weird like contacts or location. You can play with random people, so the standard online interaction warnings apply—mute anyone being obnoxious. The privacy policy linked in the App Store is fairly standard for a free game. I didn’t feel like it was overstepping, but I also never use my real name in my profile for these kinds of games. Just be smart.

Frequently asked questions
How does the proximity voice chat work in Captivity Horror Multiplayer?

The game uses proximity-based voice chat, so you can only hear teammates who are physically close to you in the map. This creates intense moments where whispers fade out as you get separated, forcing you to coordinate carefully under pressure.

What kind of objectives do you complete in a match?

Players typically need to find items like fuses or solve puzzles while avoiding the monster. Success depends on teamwork and communication, as you must distract the monster or quietly complete tasks without being caught.

Why do my controls feel imprecise, especially when trying to pick up items?

Many players report that tapping small objects on shelves can be frustratingly inaccurate, causing your character to float around instead of grabbing the item. A quick fix is to crouch or adjust your angle before tapping, and the developers are aware of this issue for future updates.

I keep getting stuck on terrain like tree roots—how can I avoid this?

Getting stuck on map geometry is a known bug, especially in the forest map during chases. To minimize this, try to stay on open paths and avoid tight corners near roots; if you do get stuck, you may have to quit the match as there's no unstuck button yet.

How does Captivity Horror Multiplayer compare to Dead by Daylight Mobile?

While Dead by Daylight Mobile offers more polished graphics and a larger player base, Captivity Horror Multiplayer is free with no paywalls and focuses on proximity chat for scarier, more intimate teamwork. It's a solid alternative if you want a quick, jumpy horror experience without spending money.
