First Impression
Right away the graphics looked way brighter and cuter than the original Candy Crush. I downloaded it last Tuesday night while procrastinating on my history paper and the intro level was fun enough to keep me going for like 20 minutes. But then I hit level 12 and suddenly I needed three friends to help me “free the octopus” which is basically just a way to force you to bug your friends or wait forever. The characters are kind of adorable though I like the one with the bubble gum hair. My first thought was wow this is more colorful than my old game but I also felt like I was missing something because the boosters don’t explain themselves well.
What It Does Well
The new game modes like “Dunk the Cookie” actually feel different from just matching three things. I liked that one because it’s not just about clearing jelly but you have to think about angles. The animations are smooth on my Samsung Galaxy A54 no lag at all even on the subway. The characters each have special powers which is cool but honestly I still don’t understand half of them because the tutorial is really short. The game also lets you connect to Facebook which I did to compare scores with my roommate Sarah and that part is fun because we send each other lives. The daily rewards are decent I got a free booster yesterday just for logging in. And I will say the sound effects are satisfying that little crunch noise when you match candy is addictive.
Where It Falls Short
Okay here’s where it gets annoying. The game gives you five lives and once you’re out you either pay or wait 30 minutes for one life. I’m a broke student I can’t afford to keep buying lives for a game. It feels like it’s designed to push you into spending money. Also the ads are constant. Every couple levels you have to watch a 30-second ad for some other game and if you accidentally tap it you get redirected to the app store. That happened to me three times in ten minutes. Another thing is the difficulty spikes hard. Level 18 was easy then level 19 felt impossible without power-ups. It’s not balanced it just wants you to buy boosters. And some of the “new” features like the characters feel like they’re just there to look cute not to actually help you win.
Is It Worth the Price?
It’s free to download which is great but the in-app purchases are way too expensive for what you get. Four dollars for a bundle of lives and boosters? That’s almost the price of a coffee at my campus cafe. I’d rather spend that on real food. The game is fun in short bursts but it’s clearly set up to make you frustrated and then pay to skip the wait. If you have self-control and patience you can play for free but for me it’s not worth spending any actual money on.
Developer & Support
I tried contacting support because my game froze in the middle of level 15 and I lost two lives. I went to their help page and submitted a request. The response came like 18 hours later and it was a generic copy-paste message saying “We understand your frustration” and some steps I already tried like restarting the app. No apology no compensation for the lost lives. It felt like talking to a robot. I get that they probably get tons of complaints but a little human touch would go a long way.
Privacy & Safety
I connected my Facebook and later I started seeing ads that were weirdly specific like for things I searched on Google. That freaked me out a bit. The privacy policy is long and full of legal talk so I didn’t read all of it but I noticed they collect data on your gameplay and device info. For a puzzle game that feels like overkill. If you’re someone who cares about privacy I’d skip the Facebook connection. I haven’t had any safety issues like weird messages but it’s still unsettling how much they track.
