My Experience with Bulo Maki: Chaos Horde

What surprised me most was how much I got attached to the little weirdos. I thought it would be another forgettable tap-and-wait game, but the story of Bulo and Maki is actually kind of funny and heartwarming. I found myself playing it on the bus, in the library between study sessions, and even for a solid hour last Tuesday night when I was supposed to be reading for my econ class. The battles are short, usually just a few minutes, which is perfect for my schedule. The art style is bright and chaotic in a good way, and it just feels different from all the other free games clogging up the app store. It didn’t feel like a cheap cash grab, which is what I’m always wary of.

Features Worth Noting

The best part is building your team. It’s not just about picking the strongest guy; you have to think about how their abilities work together. I have this one combo I love where I use “Zappy” to stun a whole group of enemies, then immediately swap to “Rocktooth” to slam right into them. Pulling that off feels awesome. The multiplayer mode is a blast if you have a friend who plays. My roommate and I tried it, and we were yelling across the room trying to coordinate our attacks. It was pure, fun chaos. They also have these limited-time Chaos Events that mix up the rules, which keeps things from getting stale. You can’t just use the same strategy every time, and I like that it makes me think.

What Needs Work

The beginning is a mess of pop-ups and tutorials. I almost quit in the first ten minutes because it felt like the game wouldn’t let me just play. Once you get past that, it’s fine, but it’s a big hurdle. My other gripe is the grind. To unlock new heroes without paying, you have to replay levels over and over to collect enough of the special currency. I spent a whole Sunday afternoon just farming the “Fungal Falls” level, and it got pretty boring. The game can also feel a bit unbalanced sometimes in PvP, where it seems like some players have clearly paid for an advantage, but it’s not constant.

Pricing

It’s completely free to play through the main story, which is great. I haven’t spent a single cent and I’ve gotten dozens of hours of fun. They make money from a battle pass, skins for your heroes, and a currency to speed things up. The ads are only for optional bonus rewards, which I appreciate. I never felt forced to watch one. While I’m too broke to buy anything myself, I don’t resent the system. It seems fair for a free game. If I had a bit more disposable income, I might toss the developers a few bucks for the starter pack just to thank them.

Developer Notes

From what I’ve seen on the app store page, the developers at CHUMOB are pretty active. Since I started playing a few months ago, I’ve noticed a couple of updates that added new heroes and fixed bugs. The app store reviews mention mixed experiences with support—some people got help quickly, others didn’t. I’ve been lucky and haven’t had any major issues that required me to contact them, so I can’t speak from personal experience. The fact that they’re still putting out new content for a free game is a good sign in my book.

Security & Privacy

I got it from the official App Store on my iPhone. The permissions it asked for seemed normal for an online game—basically needing an internet connection to play and save your progress. I didn’t see any red flags or requests for weird access to my contacts or photos. It hasn’t drained my battery unusually fast or caused any problems on my phone. As with any free app, I’m always a little cautious, but so far it’s been perfectly fine and hasn’t given me any reason to worry.

Frequently asked questions
How does team building work in Bulo Maki: Chaos Horde?

Team building is about more than just picking the strongest character; you need to think about how their abilities synergize. For example, you can stun a group of enemies with one hero and then follow up with a heavy hitter to maximize damage.

What is the multiplayer mode like?

The multiplayer mode lets you team up with a friend to coordinate attacks in real time, which can be a chaotic and fun experience. Players often find themselves yelling across the room to sync their moves, making it perfect for playing with a roommate.

The game starts with too many tutorials and pop-ups. How can I get past this?

The beginning can be overwhelming, but the tutorials only last about ten minutes. If you push through them, the game opens up and becomes much more enjoyable, so try to stick with it until you can actually start playing freely.

I feel like I have to grind a lot to unlock new heroes. Is there a way to speed this up?

Grinding is required to earn special currency for unlocking heroes without paying, and it can get repetitive. You can speed things up by focusing on levels like 'Fungal Falls' for farming, but be prepared for some time investment if you want to avoid spending money.

How does Bulo Maki: Chaos Horde compare to other free mobile games?

Unlike many free games that feel like cash grabs, Bulo Maki offers a heartwarming story, short battles perfect for on-the-go play, and a bright, chaotic art style. It stands out by making you care about the characters and requiring thoughtful team strategies rather than just tapping mindlessly.
