Here we are several months later and I’m still using it, mostly because I needed a quick way to generate concept art for a Web3 marketing project I was freelancing for. The UI is basic—almost too basic—but it loads instantly on my phone. No obnoxious splash screen, no forced tutorial. Just a grid of blank ape templates staring at you. The background music was off-putting at first (some generic lo-fi beat), but I turned it off in settings after 30 seconds. For a free app, the onboarding didn’t insult my intelligence.

What It Does Well

The customization sliders are actually responsive. I spent last Tuesday evening in bed tweaking fur colors and facial expressions, and it handled every adjustment without lag. The eyebrow combos alone are impressive—like 30 different styles from angry to spaced-out. Background patterns are solid too, with gradients that don’t look like clip art. I made about 50 different apes in one sitting just testing the limits. The export feature lets you save as PNG with decent resolution, which I needed for mockups. The marketplace integration works for browsing, though I haven’t bought or sold anything through it. The randomization button is fun for inspiration—spit out a weird ape with a gold tooth and backwards cap that I actually used as a base for a client deliverable. For generating unique-looking characters fast, this app does its job. The preset management is straightforward. You can save drafts, which is more than I expected from a free tool.

Where It Falls Short

Let’s be real—this isn’t a professional art tool. The layer system is clunky. You can’t reorder layers once you’ve placed them, so if you add a hat then decide you wanted it behind the ears, you have to delete and start over. That cost me a solid hour of frustration on a Saturday afternoon. The color picker is basic—no hex input, just sliders. For someone who works with brand colors regularly, that’s a dealbreaker for serious use. The app crashed twice when I tried to save a particularly complex ape with like 15 accessories stacked. Not a dealbreaker, but annoying. The asset library feels limited after a few sessions. I’ve cycled through every shirt and mouth option within two weeks. For a “creator” app, I expected more frequent updates with new traits. Also, the marketplace section is clearly built for people already deep in NFT culture. There’s no real guide for newcomers on gas fees or blockchain stuff. It assumes you know what you’re doing.

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s free, so obviously you’re not losing money. But free apps have hidden costs—either your data, your time wrestling bad design, or endless ads. This one has minimal ads. A banner at the bottom that doesn’t interfere, and you can watch a 30-second video to unlock a premium accessory pack. I watched one, got a cyberpunk hat I never used, and never bothered again. So financially, yeah it’s worth zero dollars. But the time investment is real. If you need a quick character generator for memes or social media posts, it’s fine. If you’re actually trying to mint profitable NFTs on the blockchain, you’d be better off with a desktop tool or a proper graphic design suite. This is a mobile toy with marketplace training wheels. For a freelancer on a budget though, it’s hard to complain about free tools that do one thing okay.

Developer & Support

I haven’t contacted support because the app worked well enough for my needs. But I did dig through the app store reviews when I was considering deleting it after that layer bug. The developer, 31 Dress up Games, seems responsive enough—they replied to several negative reviews within a week offering troubleshooting steps. That’s better than most. But their replies are copy-paste boilerplate. “We’re sorry you experienced this issue. Please contact us at [email].” No real personal touch. The app has been updated twice since I downloaded it. First update fixed a crash on older Android versions. Second added like two new background patterns. Development pace is slow. Don’t expect weekly content drops or radical feature overhauls. It’s maintained but not passionately evolved.

Privacy & Safety

This is where I get nervous. The app asks for storage access to save your creations—standard, fine. But it also requests internet access for the marketplace, which makes sense. What bothered me was the permissions popup when I first opened it asking to “access photos, media, and files” before I’d even made anything. I denied it and the app still worked, which was a relief. However, the privacy policy is vague about data sharing for NFT transactions. They collect device IDs and usage analytics. No mention of blockchain wallet data security. I wouldn’t log in with a crypto wallet that holds real value. For messing around with fake apes, fine. But treat your actual crypto wallet like a loaded gun—keep it far from free mobile apps that could have shoddy backend security. I haven’t seen any data breach reports, but 31 Dress up Games isn’t a household name. Proceed with caution if you value your privacy.
