About Basketball Scoreboard

I got sick of the constant “what’s the score?” arguments every Tuesday night at the community center court. Someone would swear it was 15-14, another guy was sure it was tied. I figured there had to be a free app to just keep a simple tally, so I found this one by SeedsJP on the Play Store. My rule is to never pay for an app until I’ve wrung every last bit of value from the free version, so this seemed perfect. For three days, I used it to track our games, and it does the main job. It puts a scoreboard on my Pixel 7. That’s it. No fancy stats, no league tracking, just points and fouls. That simplicity is exactly what I wanted at first.

Features & Highlights

The features are bare-bones, which is mostly fine. You can name two teams, which led to us mocking our friend Mike by naming a team “Mike’s Missed Layups.” You tap +1, +2, or +3 to add points, and there’s a button for fouls and to track the period. There’s a game timer too, which we used once for a 12-minute running clock. The best part is the history log. After our game last night, I could see we actually won 22-20, not 21-19 like everyone was yelling about. It’s proof the app is doing its core job. I didn’t find any hidden “pro” features locked behind a paywall, which I always check for immediately. What you see is what you get.

User Experience

During a game, it’s pretty good. The numbers are big and clear, so when a dispute started on Wednesday, I just held up my phone and shut down the argument in two seconds. The buttons are large enough that I didn’t fumble too much, even with my hands a bit sweaty. It launches fast from my home screen. But the design feels a few years old. Sometimes tapping the +2 button feels a little less responsive than it should, and I’ve accidentally hit the period button when going for a foul. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s not perfectly smooth either. For a free tool, you accept a little jank.

Pricing

It’s free. I’ll always give points for that. There are small banner ads at the bottom of the screen, but they’re just silent pictures. They’ve never jumped up or played a video, which is a huge relief. I’ve uninstalled so many apps that hit you with a full-screen ad right in the middle of using them. This one doesn’t do that. Since the app is so simple, I can’t imagine what they’d even charge for. Maybe removing the ads? But honestly, the ads are so unintrusive I wouldn’t pay to remove them. It feels like an honest free app, which is rare.

Updates & Support

This is where my rating drops. On my second day using it, the timer froze at 8:03 and wouldn’t reset or pause. I tapped everything. Nothing. I found a “Contact Support” link buried in the app’s menu. I sent a message explaining the bug on my Pixel 7, even included a screenshot. That was three days ago. I got one automated email back saying they received my request. Nothing since. The timer started working again after I force-closed the app, but the complete lack of a real response left a bad taste. If something bigger broke, I have zero confidence anyone would help. The app store says it gets updates, but they seem to be just for keeping it running on new phones, not adding features or fixing bugs quickly.

Security & Privacy

I’m always suspicious of what free apps are really taking from my phone. I checked the permissions before installing. It doesn’t ask for contacts, location, files, or anything weird. Just basic stuff to run and show ads. The privacy policy is short and basically says they collect data for the ads, which is standard. On my phone, I haven’t noticed it draining my battery or acting strange in the background. It feels like what it is: a simple, single-purpose tool that isn’t trying to mine my data. For a scoreboard, that’s all I need.

Frequently asked questions
Can I track fouls and periods with the Basketball Scoreboard app?

Yes, the app includes dedicated buttons for tracking fouls and the current period. You can also set a game timer, like a 12-minute running clock, to keep things organized.

Does the app have a history log to review past scores?

Yes, there is a history log that records each game's final score and details. This is great for settling disputes—you can check the log to see the exact score, like 22-20 instead of relying on memory.

Why are the +2 and period buttons sometimes unresponsive or easy to mis-tap?

Some users find the +2 button slightly less responsive than expected, and the period button is placed close to the foul button, leading to accidental taps. The design feels a bit dated, but these issues are minor and don't ruin the experience for a free app.

The app feels slow or janky during games—what can I do?

The app launches quickly but may feel a little sluggish when tapping buttons quickly, especially with sweaty fingers. For a free tool, this is common—try tapping firmly and giving a moment between presses to improve accuracy.

How does Basketball Scoreboard compare to paid scorekeeping apps like GameChanger?

Basketball Scoreboard is much simpler—it only tracks points, fouls, and periods with no advanced stats or league features. Unlike GameChanger, it's completely free with no paywall, making it ideal for casual pickup games where you just need a basic tally.
