About Highway Weather

As someone who drives a lot for work and the occasional weekend getaway, I’m always nervous about hitting unexpected weather. I downloaded Highway Weather hoping it would give me a clearer picture of what I was driving into, not just a generic forecast for a city. After using it for a few months, I can say it’s a solid, free tool that does one specific job pretty well: telling you what the weather is like along your actual route.

Features & Highlights

The core feature here is the route-based forecast. Instead of just plugging in a destination, you enter your start and end points. The app then draws a line on a map and shows you the weather at points along that highway. I used this last month driving from Denver to Kansas City. It accurately showed me where the rain would start about two hours into my trip, which was spot-on. The severe weather alerts are also crucial. I got a push notification for a sudden wind warning near Salina, Kansas, which prompted me to pull over for a bit until it died down. The offline maps are a lifesaver in rural areas where my data cuts out; I just download the route forecast at home before I leave.

User Experience

The interface is simple, which is good. The main screen is just a map and a bar to enter your route. I did have a frustrating moment where the app froze when I tried to zoom in on the interactive map during a heavy downpour—not the best time for a glitch. Generally, though, it’s straightforward. I appreciate that the most important info, like “Heavy Rain Next 20 Miles,” is displayed in big, clear text. The ads, however, are intrusive. They’re full-screen video ads that pop up every few times you check a new route. It really breaks the flow when you’re trying to plan quickly.

Pricing

The app is completely free, which is its biggest selling point. There’s no premium tier or subscription to remove ads, which is a double-edged sword. You get all the features without paying, but you have to tolerate the aggressive ad placement. For a free tool that provides specialized, potentially safety-critical info, it’s worth the annoyance for me. If they offered a one-time $5 fee to remove ads, I’d probably buy it in a heartbeat.

Updates & Support

Updates seem to roll out every couple of months, mostly for bug fixes and map data improvements. I haven’t noticed any major new features added recently. I contacted support once about the map freezing issue. I got a generic auto-reply first, but a real person followed up about 36 hours later asking for more details. They weren’t able to fix my specific problem but were polite and closed the loop, which is more than I get from some developers.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded Highway Weather from the official Google Play Store. The app does require location access to work properly, which makes sense. Their privacy policy states they collect route and location data to provide forecasts and may use it for anonymized analytics. The ads are definitely tracking activity to some degree—the ads I see are often related to travel or cars. There’s no major red flag, but it’s a standard free-app trade-off: you get a useful service in exchange for your location data and ad views.
