About Universal TV Remote Control

I downloaded this app after my toddler hid the remote for my living room TV for the third time this month. Desperate, I figured my phone could be the ultimate backup. The app promises to control a wide range of TVs and devices, and I was curious to see if it could actually handle my slightly older Samsung TV and my Roku stick. Over the past two weeks, I’ve put it through its paces during my usual evening wind-down routine.

Features & Highlights

The core feature is, of course, the on-screen remote. It has all the standard buttons—power, volume, channel, and a number pad. I was pleasantly surprised by the voice search; saying “play The Office on Netflix” into my phone actually opened the app on my Roku and started the show, which felt like magic. The sleep timer is a personal favorite. I set it for 30 minutes when I’m reading in bed, and it reliably turns the TV off so I don’t wake up to an infomercial at 3 AM. You can also create custom layouts, though I found the default one worked fine for my needs.

User Experience

Setting it up was the first hurdle. My Samsung TV connected after I manually entered a code from a list, which took a few tries. My Roku, however, was a breeze—it found it on the network instantly. The real test was during movie night. Using the app to pause and adjust volume worked well, but there was a noticeable half-second lag when changing inputs. Once, the app completely lost connection to my TV mid-show, and I had to force-close and reopen it. The interface is clean, but switching between my two saved devices isn’t as quick as I’d like; it takes three taps to get from controlling the TV to the Roku.

Pricing

The app is free to download and use with basic remote functions. This is great for a quick fix. However, you’ll see banner ads at the bottom of the screen. To remove ads and unlock premium features like advanced custom layouts and a more detailed TV guide, there’s a one-time purchase of $4.99. For me, the free version was sufficient for emergency use, but if my main remote broke permanently, I’d probably pay to get rid of the ads.

Updates & Support

Looking at the update history on the Google Play Store, Vsray Technology pushes an update roughly every 2-3 months, mostly for bug fixes and adding support for new TV models. I haven’t needed to contact support directly, but the in-app FAQ section is fairly basic. It covers common connection issues, but the solutions are generic (“restart the app and your TV”). For a free app, the update cadence is decent, but I wouldn’t expect personalized help.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded the app from the official Google Play Store. Its privacy policy states it collects some usage data for analytics and to serve personalized ads. It doesn’t explicitly ask for sensitive permissions like your location or contacts. During my use, I didn’t notice any sketchy behavior or intrusive pop-up ads, just the standard banners. While I’m not overly concerned, it’s good to remember that any free app with ads is involved in some level of data tracking.
