I’ve been using the Sentara MyChart app for about a year now to manage my family’s healthcare, and it’s become an essential part of my routine. Instead of playing phone tag with the clinic, I can handle so many things directly from my couch. This review is based on my real experience using it on an iPhone for everything from checking on test results to paying bills.
Features & Highlights
The core features are what sold me. I can view lab results as soon as my doctor releases them, which saves me days of anxious waiting. The messaging feature is my most-used tool; I’ve sent quick questions about medication side effects and gotten replies within a business day, avoiding unnecessary visits. Booking and rescheduling appointments is straightforward—I found an earlier slot for my son’s physical just by refreshing the calendar a few times.
I also appreciate the bill pay function. After a recent visit, I got a notification that a statement was ready, reviewed the charges, and paid it in under two minutes. The health reminders are a nice touch; I set one for my annual flu shot, and the app sent me a nudge when it was time. While the desktop site might have a few more data points, the app has everything I need for day-to-day management.
User Experience
Logging in is simple with Face ID, so I’m usually in the app within seconds. The home screen is clean, showing my upcoming appointments and recent messages right away. I remember one Sunday evening when my daughter spiked a fever; I was able to quickly message her pediatrician through the app, attach a photo of the thermometer, and get advice without an expensive urgent care trip. That moment proved its value.
However, I did hit a small snag once when trying to fill out pre-visit forms. The text fields were a bit finicky on my phone’s screen, and I had to zoom in to enter information accurately. Navigation is generally intuitive, though—tapping between “Health” for records, “Appointments” for scheduling, and “Billing” is frictionless.

The Sentara MyChart app is completely free to download and use. There are no subscription tiers, in-app purchases, or premium features locked behind a paywall. As a patient within the Sentara network, you already have access. Given that it saves me time, postage stamps for bill payments, and potentially copays for minor questions, it’s absolutely worth the download. It’s a free tool that genuinely adds convenience to healthcare.
Updates & Support
The developer pushes updates every few months, usually with minor bug fixes or small interface tweaks. I haven’t noticed any major overhauls, which is fine—it means the core experience is stable. When I forgot my password, the account recovery process via email worked as expected. For more complex issues, like a question about a specific test result not showing up, the app directs you to contact your provider’s office directly, which makes sense. It’s a portal, not a replacement for your care team.
Security & Privacy
I downloaded the app directly from the official Apple App Store. It requires a secure login with a password and offers biometric authentication, which feels safer. Sentara’s privacy policy is linked within the app and states that your health data is protected and not sold. I don’t see any third-party ads while using it, which is crucial for a medical app. My only caution is to use a secure network when accessing sensitive info, but that’s good practice for anything. I trust it with my family’s health data as much as I trust the hospital system itself.
