About NBC LA: News, Weather

I’ve tried a bunch of local news apps since moving to Los Angeles, and I keep coming back to NBC LA. It’s become my morning ritual—I open it with my coffee to check the traffic on the 405 and see if there’s any breaking news I need to know about before heading out. It feels less like a generic news aggregator and more like a tool built specifically for the chaos of this city.

Features & Highlights

The feature set is solid, but a few things really stand out in daily use. The interactive weather radar is my absolute favorite. Last week, I saw a small storm cell forming near Santa Monica on the map while I was in Downtown LA. I was able to time my drive home perfectly and missed the downpour entirely. The live streaming is also clutch; I’ve watched the news on my phone while waiting in line at the DMV, which is about as LA as it gets. The news feed is decently customizable—I’ve prioritized local politics and entertainment news, so I see less national stuff that doesn’t impact me directly. The push notifications for breaking news are timely, but I did turn off the ones for every single article.

User Experience

The app is generally clean and fast. I appreciate that the video player works well even on my spotty cellular connection in some parts of the valley. However, it’s not perfect. Sometimes after an update, the menu feels a bit laggy for a day or two. I also wish the ‘Local Happenings’ section was more robust; it often lists bigger, paid events but misses smaller community things I hear about through word-of-mouth. On the flip side, during the recent atmospheric river events, having the constant weather updates and live news coverage in one place was invaluable. It felt like having a local news desk in my pocket.

Pricing

The app is completely free to download and use. There’s no subscription tier or paywall for content, which is fantastic. You get access to all the live streams, articles, and radar. The trade-off, of course, is ads. You’ll see banner ads and occasional video ads, but they’re not as intrusive as on some other free news apps. For a zero-cost tool that provides this much local utility, I find the ad presence completely acceptable.

Updates & Support

The developers push updates every few weeks, usually with minor bug fixes or small interface tweaks. I’ve never had a major bug that broke the app. I contacted support once about an issue where my customized news feed reset, and I got a helpful, non-automated reply within 48 hours. They couldn’t retrieve my old settings but explained how to prevent it in the future. It was a straightforward, satisfactory interaction.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded the app directly from the Apple App Store. The privacy policy is fairly standard for a free news app: it collects data for ad personalization and analytics. You can opt out of personalized ads in your device settings, which I did. I haven’t noticed my data being used in creepy ways, and the app doesn’t feel overly grabby with permissions. It’s a product from a major media company, so while you’re not anonymous, it feels as secure as any other mainstream app.
