About MSNBC: Watch Live & Analysis

As someone who checks the news throughout the day, I downloaded the MSNBC app to see if it could replace flipping on the TV. I’ve been testing it for a couple of weeks on my phone and tablet, using it during my morning coffee, on my commute, and to catch up on primetime shows I missed. It’s clearly designed for viewers like me who already have a preference for MSNBC’s coverage and commentators.

Features & Highlights

The core feature is, of course, the live TV stream. Having 24/7 access to the broadcast on my devices is the main reason I keep the app installed. I found the on-demand library to be surprisingly deep; I was able to watch last night’s Rachel Maddow Show segment the next morning without any issue. The clip section is where I spend most of my time—it’s perfect for getting the key 3-5 minute take on a big story without committing to a full hour. I also set up alerts for breaking political news, which have been timely, though I had to turn off notifications for everything else because it was getting overwhelming. The social media integration feels a bit tacked on, but I did use the in-app tweet button a few times to share a clip that resonated with me.

User Experience

Opening the app, it’s straightforward. The live player is front and center, with a carousel of top stories and clips below. I remember trying to watch a live special report during a major election update, and the navigation held up—I could easily jump from the live feed to a related pre-recorded analysis clip. However, that’s also when I experienced the app’s biggest flaw: the stream buffered three times in ten minutes, forcing me to close and reopen the app. On a normal weekday afternoon, the video is usually fine. The interface isn’t flashy, which I appreciate. It’s easy to find what I’m looking for, whether it’s a specific show or the latest clips from Morning Joe.

Pricing

The app itself is free to download and use for live streaming and clips, which is a fantastic value. The catch is that you need to sign in with credentials from a participating TV provider (like Comcast or Spectrum) to unlock the full live feed. Without that login, your live access is limited. I used my parents’ cable login, which worked perfectly. For cord-cutters, this is a significant barrier. There’s no direct subscription within the app, so if you don’t have a traditional cable package, you’re mostly left with the clips and some limited live previews.

Updates & Support

I see an update for this app in the App Store every few weeks, usually with vague “bug fixes and performance improvements” notes. I did notice that after one recent update, the buffering issue seemed less frequent on my home Wi-Fi. As for support, I haven’t needed to contact them directly, but the help section within the app is basic—mostly just FAQs about logging in and system requirements. It feels like support is geared toward authentication problems rather than in-app experience feedback.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded the app directly from the official Apple App Store. Its privacy policy is extensive, as you’d expect from a major news network. It states they collect data on what you watch, how long you watch, and your interactions for personalization and ads. Since I’m logged in with a cable provider, I assume they can link that viewing data back to an account. The ads are standard video pre-rolls and banners. I didn’t notice any overly intrusive or shocking ads, mostly just promotions for other NBCUniversal shows and some mainstream products. You’re definitely trading some data for the free access if you’re not using a login.
