About the CNBC App

I’ve been using the CNBC app for about six months now, ever since I got tired of bouncing between my broker’s platform and five different news sites. I needed one hub for market data and context, and honestly, this has become my morning coffee companion. It’s from NBCUniversal, so you know the news backbone is solid, but I was curious to see if the app itself could keep up with a fast-moving market day.

Features & Highlights

The core features are what keep me opening the app multiple times a day. The customizable watchlist is my home base; I’ve got my portfolio and a few speculative stocks in there, and seeing them update in real-time without needing to refresh is crucial. I use the interactive charts all the time to quickly check a stock’s trajectory before making a move. The live TV stream is a game-changer during big market events or Fed announcements—I’ll often have it playing in the background while I work. I also have notifications set for extreme volatility on my watchlist stocks, which has saved me from missing a couple of big dips. The video clips from shows like “Mad Money” or “Squawk Box” are perfect for catching up on expert takes during my lunch break.

User Experience

Let’s talk about the feel of the app. On the plus side, I never have to hunt for the live stream or my watchlist—they’re prominently placed. However, the home screen can feel overwhelming. On days with heavy news, it’s a waterfall of headlines, video thumbnails, and market indices, which can be distracting when I just want to check one thing. I remember during the last earnings season, I opened the app for a specific quote and got sucked into three different articles and a live interview before I found what I needed. It’s information-rich, which is great, but it lacks a “zen mode” for focused checking. The search function, though, is excellent and pulls up relevant TV segments alongside articles.

Pricing

The app is completely free to download and use for its core functions: news, live TV, basic watchlists, and real-time quotes. You do need to sign up for a free CNBC account to personalize your feed and get alerts, which is a fair trade-off. They do promote their CNBC Pro subscription within the app for deeper analysis and ad-free reading, but I haven’t felt pressured to upgrade. For 99% of individual investors and news followers, the free version is absolutely worth it and packed with more than enough value.

Updates & Support

The developers push updates fairly regularly, about once a month, mostly for bug fixes and performance tweaks. I noticed a significant speed improvement on my phone after an update a few months back. As for support, I had one issue where my notification settings reset after a phone update. I used the in-app contact form and got a helpful, non-automated reply within 24 hours that walked me through the fix. It was a straightforward, positive experience.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded the app directly from the official Google Play Store. Like most free news apps, it’s supported by ads, which are present but not overly intrusive video ads that take over the screen. Their privacy policy outlines data collection for personalization and advertising, which is standard. You can manage ad personalization in your device settings, and creating an account does require an email. I haven’t noticed any shady data practices, but if you’re hyper-sensitive to tracking, it’s something to be aware of, as with any free service.
