About Disney+

As a parent and a huge Marvel fan, I signed up for Disney+ the day it launched. I was tired of juggling different services just to let my kids watch Frozen while I caught up on The Mandalorian. This app promised to bring it all together, and after using it almost daily for over a year, I can say it’s become the most-used streaming app on my phone. It’s not just a library; it’s our family’s digital comfort blanket.

Features & Highlights

The content library is the obvious star. Having everything from The Lion King (the original, thank you) to every Marvel movie in release order is a dream. But the features that make it work for real life are the downloads and profiles. I’ve filled my phone with episodes of Bluey for long car rides—it’s a road trip lifesaver. Setting up separate profiles for me, my spouse, and each kid stopped my recommendations from being a chaotic mix of preschool cartoons and sci-fi. I also appreciate the “Continue Watching” row; it remembers my place even when I switch from my TV to my phone during my commute.

User Experience

Browsing is generally smooth. The home screen does a good job highlighting new originals like Ahsoka, and I’ve discovered some great Nat Geo documentaries I wouldn’t have searched for. The moment that sold me was during a flight: my daughter, bored and restless, was instantly calm watching downloaded episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. No buffering, no stress. That said, it’s not perfect. I’ve had the app crash a few times when casting to my TV, and the search function can be weirdly stubborn. Trying to find the specific Pixar short Bao took more scrolling than I expected.

Pricing

The app itself is free to download, but you need a subscription to watch anything. I’m on the standard plan with ads. The ads are short and not too frequent, so it’s a trade-off I’m okay with to save a few bucks. For a service that bundles this much nostalgia and new, must-see content (looking at you, Loki), I find the monthly fee totally worth it. It’s cheaper than taking the family to the movies once, and we get way more entertainment out of it.

Updates & Support

The app gets updated pretty regularly, usually with subtle interface tweaks or to promote a new show. I haven’t noticed any major overhauls, which is fine—it works. I had to contact support once about a billing issue, and it was a standard experience. I used the help section in the app, filled out a form, and got an email reply within a day that solved my problem. It wasn’t lightning fast, but it was effective.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded it directly from the Apple App Store, so I’m confident it’s the official app. In terms of privacy, Disney’s policy is what you’d expect from a major company—they collect viewing data to make those recommendations. I don’t love that, but I tolerate it. The ad-supported tier does involve tracking for ad targeting. You can manage some privacy settings in your account, but there’s no way to opt out of data collection entirely if you want to use the service. For a family app, I wish the privacy controls were more granular.
