About IMDb

I’ve been using IMDb for years, first on the website and now almost exclusively on the app. As someone who watches a lot of movies and TV, it’s become an essential part of my routine. Whether I’m in a theater trying to remember where I’ve seen an actor before, or on the couch arguing with my partner about a director’s other work, I’m constantly pulling out my phone to open IMDb. It’s more than just a database; it’s my first stop for anything entertainment-related.

Features & Highlights

The core feature is, of course, the staggering amount of information. I can look up any obscure indie film from the 90s and find the full cast list, trivia, and even goofs. The watchlist feature is where I live—I’m constantly adding things I hear about on podcasts or see mentioned online. I’ve found that the “Your Watchlist” widget on my phone’s home screen is a dangerous enabler for my binge-watching habits. The “Born Today” section is a fun little daily ritual for me, and I love checking the trending movies chart to see what’s buzzing. One hidden gem I use all the time is the “Parents Guide” for movies I’m considering watching with my family; it’s much more detailed than a simple rating.

User Experience

For the most part, the app is fast and gets me what I need. Searching is quick—I just typed “that guy from the thing with the car” and it somehow guessed the right actor. However, I do agree the interface can feel cluttered. There’s a lot vying for your attention: ads, promotional content for IMDb TV (now Freevee), news articles, and the actual search function. Sometimes when I just want to look up an actor, I find myself scrolling past sections I don’t care about. On the flip side, when I was tracking the weekly release of a show, the “TV Episodes” tracking feature was flawless and sent perfect notifications. The personalized recommendations are hit or miss; sometimes it suggests a perfect deep-cut thriller, other times it’s just pushing the latest blockbuster I have zero interest in.

Pricing

The app itself is free to download and use, which is fantastic for the core database and watchlist features. The catch is the ads, which are present but not overly intrusive in my experience. They also promote their own ad-supported streaming service, Freevee, within the app. There’s a paid subscription called IMDbPro which is aimed at industry professionals, offering contact details, box office analytics, and other tools. As a regular fan, I’ve never felt the need to upgrade. The free version gives me more than enough value.

Updates & Support

The app receives regular updates, mostly for bug fixes and keeping the massive database running smoothly. I’ve noticed improvements in search speed over time. I once had an issue where my watchlist wasn’t syncing between my phone and tablet. I used the in-app support form and got a generic “clear your cache” response, which didn’t help. I eventually fixed it by logging out and back in. So, while the support isn’t amazing, the app is stable enough that I’ve rarely needed to contact them.

Security & Privacy

I downloaded the app directly from the Google Play Store. In terms of privacy, the app does collect data for personalized ads and recommendations, which is outlined in their privacy policy. You can create an account with just an email, which I did to back up my watchlist. I appreciate that I can use most features without an account if I want to. The ads are clearly marked and aren’t the deceptive “clickbait” style you see in some apps. Since I’m feeding it my watch history and ratings, I assume it’s building a profile of my tastes, but it feels like a fair trade for the free service.
